What intermodal transport means

In intermodal – or combined – transport the long leg of the journey is covered by rail or sea, and the shipment travels to the final consignee in the same loading unit, without being transferred between vehicles. The road legs are typically the first and last stretch: between the terminal and the loading point, and between the terminal and the delivery address.

Those road legs decide whether the whole chain holds. Rail and sea schedules come with time windows; if the truck is late, the container misses the train and the entire plan slips. Trucking is therefore not about distance but about punctuality.

Why combined transport

Over longer distances, the rail and sea legs use less fuel and fewer driver hours per unit of cargo, and are less exposed to road congestion and driving-time limits.

For dangerous goods there is a further argument: the cargo goes through fewer transfer operations. Every decanting step is a risk point of its own, and the container solution removes it.

Dangerous goods in the container

In an intermodal chain, dangerous goods fall under more than ADR alone: the rail leg is governed by RID and the sea leg by the IMDG Code. Marking, documentation and securing of the container must satisfy each leg.

That is why we handle the shipment with the whole chain in mind already on the road leg, and why our intermodal movements are also run with ADR and ISOPA certified drivers.
